KATHMANDU (Xinhua) — One hundred people killed, 143 injured and 1,964 families were affected in different parts of the country due to the monsoon-induced disasters in recent months, Nepali Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa said on Thursday.
At a parliament session in the capital, the home minister said that the government conducted rescue and relief operations as well as rehabilitation of affected people by mobilizing local government officials and security agencies following 1,584 monsoon-triggered disasters in the country.
“One hundred people killed, 143 injured and 1964 families were affected due to the monsoon-induced disasters in different parts of the country in recent months,” Thapa said.
In the latest disaster-related incident, four people killed, 10 injured, and three have gone missing due to landslides triggered by rainfalls at Besisahar Municipality and Marshyangdi Municipality of Lamjung district in western Nepal, the minister said.
Floods and landslides wreak havoc in mountainous and Terai regions of Nepal every year with thousands of families getting displaced and huge loss of properties, livestock, and crops.
Monsoon rains begin in June and continue through September.
They are vital for farmers in Nepal but cause loss of life and property damage every year.
Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has been forecasting rainfall, urging all to maintain high alert to cope with disasters, almost every day in recent months.
The department has been sending early warning flood alert messages in the disaster-prone districts.
