KATHMANDU — The Embassy of India in Kathmandu celebrated on 31 October 2017 the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. As part of the celebration, an essay competition on the ‘Life and Teachings of Sardar Patel’ was organized at the Nepal-Bharat Library. Keen and enthusiastic participation was seen from young boys and girls from different schools in Kathmandu.

Later in the day, the Embassy organized two screenings of the documentary titled “Life and Contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel” at the Nepal-Bharat Library. People from all walks of life watched the documentary which is a Doordarshan production. An exhibition of photographs of Sardar Patel was also put up at the Library for public viewing.

Vallabhbhai Patel, born on 31st October 1875, was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. Sardar Patel played a leading role in India’s struggle for Independence. Remembered as the ‘Iron Man of India’, Sardar Patel’s contribution to the integration of India as a nation is considered his most valuable contribution to Independent India. Since 2014, Government of India celebrates Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary on 31 October as the Rashtriya Ekta Divas.
