Mission Impossible: Fallout

Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Cast: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan

Genre: Spy Thriller/ Action

Rating: 4/5

Mission Impossible: Fallout is bigger than all the previous impossible missions. Unlike the previous missions, which were self-contained, this one is a direct consequence of the events of Rogue Nation. In addition to the continuation of the plot from Rogue Nation, the movie also contains subtle references to the previous movies in the series.

When the movie begins, we find Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (Benji – Simon Pegg and Luther – Ving Rhames) making a simple black-market exchange deal. However, the mission goes awry and they end up losing the plutonium cores they were trying to secure. As a result, Hunt and his team are forced to join forces with CIA assassin August Walker (Henry Cavill) in order to recover the plutonium cores and prevent a disaster of epic proportion.

The returning director Christopher McQuarrie knows exactly what he is doing. He delivers a great action-packed suspense thriller with a brisk pace. He lays down the stakes early on and lets the movie build up naturally. The build-up of the suspense is effortless, the reveal isn’t half-bad either. McQuarrie and his team have done a brilliant job of gelling the action and the plot. The action sequences, as is the norm for Mission Impossible movies, are breath-taking. It keeps the audience at the edge of their seats for the entirety of the movie. In particular, four scenes stood out for me above all others: the Bathroom Brawl involving Cruise, Cavill and Lian Yang, the Bike Chase in Paris, the Rope Climb, and the Helicopter stunt. These action scenes leave the audience gasping for breath. Yet again, Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible team, somehow, manage to outdo themselves.

All in all, ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’ goes above and beyond all expectations. This is an all-out action thriller with no holds barred death-defying action sequences. My only qualm of the movie is the use of background score, or rather the absence of it. The lack of the iconic Mission Impossible theme in the action sequences took away a certain level of drama from the experience. It left me wondering and wanting. Apart from this very personal issue, Mission Impossible: Fallout is a non-stop action-packed spy thriller well worth your money and time.
