KATHMANDU — She was the closest from the stars and yet could never reach them.

A tragic faith, Thales Alenia Aerospace company, and France could not bear to let her be victim off any longer. It is official, Nepal is now going to have a national Satelite to its own, and join the space venture.

Its very first own Satellite in 2022

On the 11th of March 2019, Thales and Leonardo aerospace have signed an agreement to start the building and preview the launch of a telecommunication satellite for Nepal. This is a huge step forward for the country, heading towards its development objectives on a path of progress getting broader every day.

All it has to do now is find a name for the metal bird before its departure in 2022. It even already has a parking spot waiting for here up there (123.3° E orbital slot) and a ticket booked on the space bus (satellite delivery system).

What will it change for Nepal?

“Develop its space capabilities and services for the benefit of all its citizens” Eric Imbert, Sales Vice-President for Thales Alenia Space.

More than the pride one country is bathed in when joining the space race, it will give access to high-speed internet all across the country. And it is not just to binge watch Bollywood movies.

High-Speed Internet comes in the reinforcement of education, agriculture, health, security, tourism.

Giving national access to the internet should break the wall between remote and developed areas, help the government gather more data and respond with more efficiency to the need of the people among the very thew on this blue planet still living “disconnected”.

This project will also allow the creation of new software and services helping throughout the network those who can’t be physically reached.

Because if one country needs an invisible net connecting its citizen, it sure is Nepal, where building proper infrastructures and communication routes are made nearly impossible by the challenging landscape.

More information on the subject will come soon as we still keep you updated and investigate on the outcomes to be expected from this project.
