KATHMANDU — Nepal ranks 94 in Democracy Index 2017 according to the Economist Intelligence Unit 2017 Index. The Himalayan nation is now a hybrid regime with the score of 5.18. It needs to increase its score to 6 plus to become a flawed democracy in coming days.

Nepal has made a significant improvement in its ranking from 102nd to 94th. “Nepal successfully held a series of local and provincial elections under the constitution that was ratified in 2015,” the Economist Intelligence Unit said.

Also, the media freedom ranking of Nepal is largely unfree with the score of 6 and is ranked at 71. The ranking comes at a time when media in Nepal faces corporate, political and other external influences and control.
