KATHMANDU (Xinhua) — Nepal’s import from China witnessed a sluggish growth during the first half of the current fiscal year 2017-18 that began in mid-July 2017.

According to Nepal’s Department of Customs, the country’s import from China grew by 5.95 percent to 67.88 billion Nepali rupees (665 million U.S. dollars) as of mid-January, down from 11 percent in the previous fiscal year 2016-17. “One of the reasons behind the sluggish growth of the imports from China this year is poor road infrastructure on the Nepali side,” Nara Bahadur Thapa, executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank, told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Although Nepal imports most of the Chinese goods through sea routes, a significant portion of imports take place through Rasuwagadhi-Kerung route.
