KATHMANDU – Rastriya Janata Party (Nepal) has announced protest programs to disrupt the second round of local election scheduled for June 28 on Sunday.

A meeting chaired by the coordinator of the party Mahantha Thakur in the afternoon has announced protest programs including obstruction of all election-related activities from June 20-28, general strike, and torch and stick rallies among others.

The coalition of Madhes-based parties issued a press statement announcing protest programs that also include general strike in Tharuhat, Madhes and Limbuwan regions from Tuesday till Friday.

RJP is adamant that it will not participate in the second round of local election if the constitution isn’t amended and an additional number of local units not added in Terai in proportion to the population.

The government has already got the act related to political parties amended to facilitate the participation of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal in the second round of local election scheduled for June 28.

RJP can now use any of the six symbols of its constituent parties in the local election. The Cabinet meeting earlier on Sunday took a decision to amend the act in a way to make it easy for RJP to acquire election symbols. The House convened three meetings on the day to amend the act.

The government has also applied for vacation of the Supreme Court (SC) interim order staying addition of local units in Terai. The government sought review of the interim order to appease RJP to ensure participation of the coalition of Madhes-based parties in the election.
