At least 97 Students were arrested in 51 cases were filed with different police stations for creating sabotages by spreading rumors through social media facebook during students’ movement demanding safe roads following the death of two college students in Dhaka.

Md Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the information to Kathmandu Tribune on Thursday.

Out of the 51 cases, eight are under the ICT Act. The number of people accused in these cases is 29 and 16 of them have been arrested.

The people arrested in these cases include photographer-activist Shahidul Alam, actress and model & Actor Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, and BUET student Daiyan Nafis.

They allegedly tried to change the course of the non-political student movement through social media posts.

Eden College student and quota reform protest leader Lutfunnahar Luma, and the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) student Nazmus Sakib were arrested on Wednesday on similar charges.

The law enforcers arrested a number of university students after the senior students joined those of schools and colleges by the end of the road safety movement triggered by the deaths of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College in a road crash on July 29.

A total of 43 cases were started under the Penal Code and Special Powers Act. The number of arrestees in these cases is 81, including 22 students from private universities. Different organizations and political parties are demanding the release of the students.

International organizations have also called for the release of Drik Gallery’s founder Shahidul.

Md Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relation Division in DMP said to Kathmandu Tribune, police are now active to track down those who were involved in spreading rumors. Students’ movement erupted in the city on July 30 centering the death of two students of Shaheed Ramizuddin Cantonment College in a road accident.
