ITAHARI — A 10-day long Maghi Festival kicked off at Jhumka of Ramdhuni Municipality in Sunsari on the occasion of the upcoming Maghi festival. The festival is celebrated especially by the Tharu community, the ethnic group of southern plains.

Maghi is celebrated on the first day of the Nepali month of Magh. Different kinds of typical delicacies of the Tharus are prepared and relished in the festival.

Dhumara dance to be formed by Tharus donning their traditional attire is the special attraction of the festival. Tharus and indigenous nationalities in thousands of number from Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Udaypur and Dhankuta are taking part in the event that was jointly inaugurated by Minister of State for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sumitra Biswas, and parliamentarian Sitaram Mehata.
