Women in Nepal have their status changed throughout the history. Compared to the 1990s, the situation of women in our country has upgraded a lot. Now, we have many examples of women who have been able to inspire others to do something good for the society.

#1 Pushpa Basnet: The CNN Hero 2012, Pushpa Basnet, is an active social worker and also the Founder/President of Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC) and Butterfly Home, non-profit organizations situated in Kathmandu. These organizations mainly look after the rights, education and the future of those children whose parents are left behind the bars and subsequently, they also have to be behind those bars with their parents. Her organizations rescue such children and ensure their better health, studies and also a better future.

#2 Mira Rai: The 29-year-old Mira Rai is a trail runner and a sky runner. She has participated in numerous international competitions and has been able to win lots of awards. She was awarded as the 2017 Adventurer of the year by National Geographic. Even though she had to give up on her education at the age of 12, now she has been able to inspire many people by the help of her talent. She has made her country proud in many international arenas.

#3 Bidhya Devi Bhandari: The 56-year-old second president of Nepal is also the first lady president of Nepal. She is the first woman to hold the office. She was married to Madan Bhandari, who died in a car accident near Dasdhunga, Chitwan back in 1993; though it is referred as an accident, many people suspect it to be a murder and the case still remains unsolved. She is the first lady of Nepal has inspired many women to pursue their dreams and that if once determined, anyone can fulfil their dreams with courage.

#4 Anuradha Koirala: The 68-year-old social activist, Anuradha Koirala is a name with whom most of the Nepalese are familiar to. The CNN Hero of the year 2010 is the founder and director of Maiti Nepal, a non-profit organization in Nepal that mainly deals with the victims of sex-trafficking. The organization helps the victimized women to be able to again live their life as a normal one and lets them stay in the organization, Maiti Nepal until their parents accept them back and if that’s not the case they can stay there unless they become able to stand on their own. She is one of the inspiring women to who many Nepalese women can look up to.

#5 Jhamak Ghimire: Jhamak Ghimire is a renowned face in the field of Nepali literature. She was born with cerebral palsy due to which she doesn’t have a normal life like other people. She writes with her left foot and for her autobiography, Jiwan Kada Ki Phool, she was awarded Madan Puraskar. She is also a columnist for the daily newspaper, Kantipur. Even after her disability, she has been able to achieve so many things in life that a normal person has not achieved. This was only because of her keen interest in literature and her determination towards her work.
