Traffic police plans stringent checks during festivals

KATHMANDU — The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division is to make the checks against drunk driving stringent during the festivals as Dashain, Tihar and Chhath among others.

The MTPD is intensifying the checking as well as making it stern citing that many people tend to drive after taking liquor during the festivals which increases the chances of fatal road accidents.

Chief of the MTPD Sarbendra Khanal said the Division has made arrangements for conducting regular checking in view of the possibility of big accidents taking place during the festival period due to drunk and reckless driving.

Likewise, the Division has made arrangements for carrying out special checking at the transit points of the Kathmandu Valley in a bid to stop various malpractices as the vehicles charging the passengers exorbitant fare, keeping people on board exceeding their capacity and issuing passenger ticket for single seat to two people.

The MTPD Chief Khanal has urged the citizens to immediately inform the nearest traffic police or the citizen help desk official if any driver violated the traffic rules or charges exorbitant fare.

The MTPD has set up citizen help desks at main places of the Kathmandu Valley like New Bus Park, the Old Bus Park, Kalanki, Koteshwar, Gaushala, Balkhu, Airport, Sundhara, Nagdhunga, Jorpati, Machha Pokhari, Satdobato, among others. These help desks have been set up in collaboration with the Department of Transport Management.

The Division is also intensifying legal action to control the incidents of traffic rule violations.

Similarly, it is promoting and greatly encouraging the use of FM radio and mobile apps for creating public awareness on these issues. Also the police personnel at different places will provide prior information to the passengers about the problems they are likely to face in course of travel. RSS
