World Habitat Day being marked on Monday

KATHMANDU — The Ministry of Urban Development has decided to mark the World Habitat Day on Monday.

At the call of UN Human Settlements Programme, the first Monday of October is marked as the World Habitat Day every year. But, as the first Monday was festival time, the Ministry planned to mark the day on the last Monday of October.

Ministry Spokesperson Shambhu KC informed that the government is to observe the World Habitat Day and the World Town Planning Day together on Monday. The Town Planning Day is however marked on November 8 every year.

These two international days are being observed same day in order to incorporate the habitat issues in the town planning as per federal set up of the country, KC added.

However, separate committees have been formed to organize programmes marking the days. The programmes are to sensitize the stakeholders on congruity in the town planning to be adopted by the central, provincial and local governments. The national slogan for this year’s World Town Planning Day is ‘Town Planning in Federal Nepal.’

During a press meet organized to share this information, Director General at Department of Urban Development and Construction, Ramesh Prasad Singh, informed that four satellite cities were being constructed to make the Kathmandu city more systematic.

Similarly, 293 municipalities would have well managed towns.

he World Habitat Day is being marked since 1986. But Nepal began marking it since 2001. RSS
