Argentina upset the Netherlands 4-3 in the penalty shootout and advanced to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinals in Qatar after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved two penalties. After eight years, Argentina finally made it to the World Cup semifinals when Martinez emerged as the match-winning player in a thrilling second quarterfinal at the venerable Lucelle Stadium. The game finished in a 2-2 deadlock after the allotted 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, necessitating a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Monitell, Lautaro Martinez, and Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi scored in that match. The attempt by Enzo Fernandez was outside of the target.

Wout Weghost and Luc de Jong both scored goals for the Netherlands. In Argentina’s triumph, Martinez, who rose to the status of hero, stopped shots from Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.
