Are beauty pageants bad? How do you measure the beauty of a person? I know a person whether he/she is oversized or small sized to be beautiful equally. A man with receding hairline in his mid-twenties, or boy or girl who is little out of shape to be beautiful too. Do we need beauty pageant contests to tell us who’s beautiful and who’s not?

Some pageant cannot be the benchmark of beauty. They are full of titles: Miss Smile, Miss Smart. How can a beauty contest decide who’s got a beautiful smile and who’s smart? One cannot fathom the logic of such contests. Moreover, contestants are short lived. Glamour is a booming industry, there is a dark side to it. It creates a false impression upon youth, for instance, 5 feet 5 inch is standard height for entering Miss or Mr. Something, what about people who are a little bit short in their stature, are not they equally capable and qualified enough for it? Remember external appearances do not define the quality of life.

Beauty has its positive sides to a shy person, he or she has to break the barrier to talk, but do we need to objectify beauty. In nature even buzzing mosquitoes has its place, even roaring lion has its place. Human, the most intelligent race, creates lots of problem in this world due to comparison and illusion created by others. A beauty pageant creates false glory. Eventually affecting the self-image of a person. It is rather an industry which makes money. It is good as long as it does not affect anyone.

But there is must be of some authority, that how unrealistic is a beauty pageant. How models are portrayed, everything from their costumes to makeup is unreal. To drive the car you need to pass the licensing trial so does this so-called beauty pageant judge must be judged like they do to others? It is time to reflect if beauty pageants are really bad or not in Nepal? Beauty is not being commercialized but the false notion of fabricated appearance is being sold.

What do you think? Are beauty pageants really bad?
