Himal magazine, a respected and influential voice in Nepali journalism for over two decades, will suspend publication from June 2023. The decision was announced by publisher Kanakmani Dixit on Monday.

“We have to give sad news to the readers, Himal magazine will take a break from this June 2080 issue,” Dixit said. “We apologize for the inconvenience caused to readers, customers, advertisers and well-wishers by this decision.”

The decision to suspend publication is likely due to a number of factors, including the decline in the print media industry and the rising cost of production. However, it is also a reflection of the challenges facing Nepali journalism in general. The country’s media landscape is increasingly polarized and the space for independent and critical reporting is shrinking.

Himal magazine was founded in 1997 by Dixit and other prominent Nepali journalists. It quickly became a leading voice in Nepali journalism, known for its in-depth reporting and critical analysis of the country’s political and social landscape. The magazine has won numerous awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s highest honor for public service.

The suspension of Himal magazine is a loss for Nepali journalism.
