KATHMANDU — President Bidya Devi Bhandari has issued an ordinance on citizenship. President Bhandari has issued the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Ordinance.

On the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, President Bhandari has issued the ordinance in accordance with Article 114, Clause 1 of the Constitution.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held last Thursday evening had decided to bring an ordinance to give citizenship to the children of born citizens on the basis of descent.

With the issuance of the ordinance, the children of born citizens will now get citizenship on the basis of descent. However, both parents of such children must be Nepali citizens.

At the same time, the demand raised by the Janata Samajwadi Party has been fulfilled. JSP has stated that important demands related to citizenship have been met.

Clause (3) of Article 11 of the Constitution states that the children of a citizen who obtained Nepali citizenship on the basis of birth before the commencement of the Constitution are both Nepali citizens and will acquire Nepali citizenship on the basis of descent after reaching adulthood.
