KATHMANDU — The capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, is not only the city of amenities and luxury but the place drawing attention from many sides seeking security. The number and the extent of crimes here are formidable.
A recent data has revealed the appalling reality that the number of the people involved in crimes did not have any job which is comparatively higher than those having professions.
The data recorded by Nepal Police said a total of 5,182 jobless people involved in the crimes, while the number of labor in the crimes stood at 2,206; those in agriculture at 375 and traders at 194 and employees at 27. Similarly, 65 percent of those accused of crimes are jobless. Total numbers of crimes in the year 2073/074 were 5,924.
Then, which time is haunted most by the criminals in the capital city? The data revealed- six hours after 6:00 pm. During this period, as many as 1,615 incidents of lawlessness were committed.
Categorizing further, the age group from 26 to 35 is the most active to perpetrate the crimes. The people belonging to this group committed 2,338 lawlessness incidents.
However, compared to the previous year, the Kathmandu Valley witnessed less number of crimes in the fiscal year of 2073/074.
The Metropolitan Police Office Ranipokhari recorded 5,924 incidents of crimes in 2073/074 against 6,244 the previous year.
Among these, Kathmandu faced 77 percent of the crimes while Lalitpur faced 15 percent and Bhaktapur eight percent, said Bam Bahadur Bhandari, Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police during the press conference Tuesday.
As per the nature of the crime, social category recorded the highest- 2884, followed by murder/murder attempt-863, organized crime-614, suicide 468, theft 429, violence against women/girls-301, road accidents-176, and others-65.
By location, the valley’s main city area witnessed 49 per cent of the criminal incidents while the areas housing new settlements 36 per cent and rural areas 15 per cent.
Criminal activities like banking fraud, human trafficking, the smuggling of illegal drugs, organized and cyber crimes that dominate the crime list and of them, organized and cyber crimes are major a challenge, said Bhandari.
A total of 123 underwent a polygraph test in the valley to determine whether the criminal will confess to the crime. Of them who underwent the test, 64 told a lie, 38 confessed to their crime and a concrete result is yet to come out in the case of 21, he said.
Meanwhile, police have set a plan to launch a campaign to reduce sexual violence against women in public transport. The efforts follow the increasing complaint of sexual harassment cases against women in public vehicles.
Under this drive, an awareness programme will be held in and around Bus Park while surveillance will be stepped up in public vehicles, said Bhandari.
The campaign will continue for three months in the first phase and its form will be revised following the effectiveness of the drive, he said. RSS
