The agitation for justice in the murder case of the 13-year-old girl Nirmala Panta in Kanchanpur two years ago started from Mahendranagar and then took a nationwide form. This case became a critical testimony about how unsafe our country is for children and women, even in today’s day and age. Further, there was an uproar towards police incompetency in the investigation, which many believed to be a cover-up for the culprits. There were widespread marches, with demonstrators and the public asking that the government and the investigation authorities ensure the suspects be identified and be held responsible. Separate investigation teams were created including two high-level teams under Joint Secretary of the Home Ministry, Hari Prasad Mainali, and Additional Inspector General Dhiru Basnyat.
Even after two years of the horrific incident, the case remains unresolved. After having enough, social media have called out for justice. In particular, Facebook have commented on the profile picture of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official page and demanded speedy justice for Nirmala. Comments such as #JusticeforNirmala and #GivejusticetoNirmala are being posted. Other have expressed solidarity with the comments campaign launched by the youths who are members of the popular Facebook group ‘MRR’ to show the government’s negligence towards the case. They have expressed dissatisfaction and anger over the government’s actions. Home Minister, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Tourism and Civil Industries Minister, Yogesh Bhattarai, CPN (Maoist) Chairman, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and other ministers are now being targeted on Facebook.
On Twitter as well, have come together to show solidarity for Nirmala by tweeting #JusticeforNirmalaPanta and #delayedjusticeisjusticedenied.
