KATHMANDU — During the Holi celebrations, everything is an excuse for a harmless confrontation, but some can’t just make do with color powder and water. In Bhrikuti Mandap, a fighting ring was installed especially for the event and those seeking a little bit more action. In this outdoor arena, 10 brave Wrestlers fought in front of thousands of multicolored spectators. An unusual brawl, organized by Bhagwati Khadka and Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation in order to promote the sport in a country slowly starting to be found of it.

So obviously, many curious attended. And among them, a very special guest: Famous Nepali actor Rajesh Hamal made his legendary presence noticeable. On the other side of the camera for once, he was a cheerful spectator to the outstanding scenes played in front of him.

Wrestling fever was caught by Nepali combat sport’s enthusiasts ten years ago during the rise of The Hymalian Tiger. First Nepali ever making it to the notorious WWE (American most followed wrestling league). Since then, many have been inspired by the pioneer and joined the hardcore training required by such a physical activity.

According to Grunaraj Ruchal, 2-time gold medalist Muaythai champion, chairman and referee for the Bhagwati Khadaka (Nepali wrestling association); wrestling is like every fight that life puts in your way: It teaches you to fall, to endure, but at the end, to always stand back up on your feet no matter how hard you suffered.

It also teaches you discipline, self-control, and other more than needed modern day “survival skill”.

“When you fight, it’s never only for you. It’s for your friends, your family, your country. It is also much-needed self-protection for people living in this part of the world, especially women.” said the boxer.

Indeed, women were not only part of the show, but they were also the main actresses. Their stunning performances impressed the public and were a beacon for women empowerment in the country. These magnificent warriors proved to all witnesses that there is breathtaking beauty exposed throughout mental and physical strength.

Some sexist people still say to you “you fight like a girl”? Please don’t be offended, because after seeing one of these shows, you can only take it as a compliment. Our two-time world champion referee was thrown out of the ring by brave Ashmita Sunar (Jureli) like if he was no less than a bag of potatoes on its way to the market.

Maybe one day, the Nepali flag will be feared by all contestants of the international wrestling stage. And Holi a festival about fighting inner demons is the best place to put this idea forward.
