The number of people infected with coronavirus has been increasing every other day in Nepal and Kathmandu valley. Even after four months of lockdown and surveillance, the virus has not been in control. The government has constantly been advising the citizens to adopt various guidelines to keep themselves safe.

Not wearing a mask is one of the key conditions for raising contact with the virus. Yet wearing masks doesn’t appear to be a serious concern or priority for people as they are not used to it. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also started taking action against those who go out without wearing masks under the Infectious Diseases Act 2020.

To make people more serious about wearing masks, a movement has started on Twitter known as the Mask Challenge. The World Health Organization also launched the Wear a Mask Challenge. This challenge is said to be started by Sanjiv Neupane in Nepal. On Saturday morning, he read a news article about coronavirus. Citing a study, the report said: “Eighty percent of people wearing a mask can do more to reduce coronavirus infections than lockdown. After reading that research, I came up with the idea to start the Mask Challenge“, Neupane told Setopati. “I also felt the need to raise awareness to wear a mask“, he said. This trend has now spiraled and people have joined in by posting pictures and tagging others. A few of them can be seen below:

A few days earlier celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Kerry Washington had taken on the #WearADamnMask challenge in the United States. The challenge #WearADamnMask was started by designer Tory Burch.
