It all started when Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng aka Uncle Roger uploaded a reaction video on his YouTube channel slamming the BBC Food Presenter Hersha Patel for her unconventional way of cooking Chinese delicacy, egg-fried rice.

In the video, Ng groaned when he saw Patel draining the rice through a colander claiming that was not the right process. “What she doing? Oh, my god. You’re killing me, woman. Drain the — she’s draining rice with colander! How can you drain rice with colander? This is not pasta!” he exclaimed.

Shortly afterward, he complained, “You’re ruining the rice,” as Patel used tap water to wash it of starch.

What Ng intended to be a comedic video shook up the internet, especially the Asian population, and it ricocheted around the internet, gaining more than 7 million views on YouTube and nearly 40 million on Twitter. Many viewers, including Asian-American celebrities such as writer Jenny Yang, claimed that was not how Chinese egg-fried rice is traditionally made.
Just a month after, Nigel teased everyone that he will be having a fun face-off with the chef Hersha Patel soon and try out Hersha’s egg fried rice for himself.

And so the wait was over:

Uncle Roger finally met the  BBC Food host, Hersha Patel, to cook the most debated egg fried rice together. Nigel uploaded the most anticipated food rendezvous on his channel yesterday at 7:45 pm.

Ng revealed that Patel had invited him over and prove to him and everyone else that she does really know how to cook rice conventionally.

Ng had also announced the collaboration with Hersha Patel on his Instagram. Ever since the reaction video got out, Harsha was being bashed with negative comments and Ng requested everyone not to be mean to her and enjoy the next video where she will show off her cooking skills and Ng will taste and react.

He wrote, “@hershapatel and I are filming our collab on Friday! Will she impress Uncle Roger with her egg fried rice? ⠀

It’s been a wild ride, thank you, everyone, here for all your support! Unfortunately, Hersha has been on the receiving end of some hate comments. Please remember that I made the Uncle Roger video as a bit of light entertainment. Please do not be mean to Auntie Hersha!⠀”

As soon as the video starts, Ng enters her home. Upon entering her kitchen, Ng was shocked to find Patel’s colander collection in her kitchen.

“This woman has so many colanders. I think this woman in love with colander. She sleeps with colander at night,” said Ng in his Uncle Roger accent.

Patel then explains to Ng that she wants him to try her plain rice and egg fried rice recipe, the way she cooks it. Patel demonstrated that she uses one cup of Basmati rice to make the dish and showed Ng that she also washes the rice first, before refilling her pot with water to cook the rice. Unsatisfied “Uncle Roger” says that Patel’s way of measuring, “two parts water to one part rice” ratio is still confusing. “Just use your finger. All Asian people use finger. This is magic measuring. You are not a scientist, why using measuring cup?” said Ng.

After the rice was steamed, it was the moment of truth. Ng tasted the plain  white rice and gave a thumbs up. “It’s okay. At first, I was skeptical. I thought this woman was going to mess it all up. But now I think it’s at least a four out of 10,” said Ng.

Patel then went on to make her controversial egg fried rice dish. To make the dish, Patel uses cold rice, one egg mixed with sesame oil, finely chopped spring onions and a dash of soy sauce, and tosses the rice over high heat.

Ng was initially amazed that Patel use the “tossing” technique but was left unimpressed after she “screwed up” and tossed the rice right out of the pot. Despite her mishap, Ng was pleasantly surprised by how good Patel’s egg fried rice dish tastes.

With his funny accent and happy face, Ng stated, “Taste test. It’s good, it’s good. If I buy this from a Chinese takeaway, I will not be their customer ever again. But for home cooking, very nice. Not bad, six out of 10.”

Here’s the full video guys! It’s a must-watch.

Ng’s video has since been viewed over 1.6 million times on YouTube with nearly 13,000 comments in under a day.
